The Ancient Town of Hoi An is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port. Its rustic charms date back to the 15th century, when indigenous and foreign influences were combined to produce this once bustling trading city. Located in the heart of the Town, the Museum of Sa Huynh Culture is home to numerous artifacts and materials of the Sa Huynh civilization, the very first traders of the port town.

I. History of the Museum of Sa Huynh Culture

The Sa Huynh people, known as the first settlers to have trades with merchants from Southeast Asia, South India and China, is yet known little about. The civilization is claimed to have developed in the Hoi An region from 1000BC to 2C AD, prior to the appearance of the Chams. Being in existence for more than 5000 years, the culture extended from the Neolithic period to the beginning of the Iron Age in provinces in Quang Binh to South Central Coast and Central Highlands. With Sa Huynh in the Central, Dong Son and Oc Eo in the north, these three major cultures were the cradle of civilization in Vietnam.

Sa Huynh economy was contributed from many sectors: agriculture (wet rice), forestry, fishery and traditional crafts. By the end of the era, sea trading was booming. During the first centuries AC in the Central, some harbor cities were formed along the coast line, including Hoi An. Since, the Sa Huynh Culture had had cultural and commercial exchanges with numerous regions in Southeast Asian, ancient China and ancient India.

Archaeologists and scientists have been studying this culture very closely, hence the foundation of the Museum of Sa Huynh Culture in 1994. Housing 971 artifacts of a civilization that flourished 2000 years ago, the museum mainly featured terracotta and metal work found in the Hoi An area. All the objects on display are original artifacts.

Wood is the main material for the house, beside the wood there are rocks and floor tiles. The stone is brought back from Thanh Hoa Province. That is the stone that makes the wooden pillars be undamaged. The floor tile is from Bat Trang, which makes the house cool in the summer, and be warm in the winter.

The distinctive point of this house is built not using a small nail. However, the house remains “self-standing” until now.

Little Desert In Tropical Land Of Vietnam

About 60 km to the northeast of Phan Thiet City, Bau Trang Sand Dune (Bàu Trắng) (also known as Bau Sen (Bàu Sen), Bach Ho or Bau Cat (Bàu Cát)) is regarded as one of the most stunning desert terrains of Vietnam. Right in the middle of the endless sand dunes, two giant, shimmering lakes appear. Together with the striking lotus pond, they form a poetic scene that will move the heart of any natural lovers.

I. What Makes Bau Trang Sand Dune Special?

Binh Thuan province has always been an intriguing destination for both domestic and foreign tourists with its extraordinary landscape. Bau Trang, an oasis-like location is one example. The area gives the impression of a desert, with vast sand dunes covering most of the land. As you climb up on sand hills, the gigantic lakes will come into view. The lakes are brightly lit under the radiant sun, sparkling like they are made of a thousand diamonds.

A large part of the water surface is covered by clusters of lotuses. The soft pink tone of the flowers, mixing with lush green shade of the leaves and the translucent blue color of the water creates a scenic, mesmerizing landscape.

The stories of Bau Trang date back to a long time ago, when Bau Trang was one giant lake. To facilitate traffic across the area, a sand road was constructed and hence, divided the lake into two separate parts, namely Bau Ba (Bàu Bà) and Bau Ong (Bàu Ông). In the local language, ‘Bau’ means ‘lake’ and ‘Trang’ means ‘white’. The word ‘Bau Trang’ depicts a water body surrounded by stretches of white sand. The other name, ‘Bau Sen’, translated as ‘Lotus Lake’, signifies a specific feature of the area.

Of the two lakes, Bau Ba is the larger one, with an area of 70 km2. It is estimated to be around 3 kilometers in length, and about 500 meters at its widest point. The average depth is nearly 5 meters and reaches its peak at 19 meters during the rainy season. Bau Trang has a diverse ecosystem, with freshwater fish being the majority.

II. Interesting Activities in Bau Trang 1. Driving on Terrain Vehicles

Once you arrive at Bau Trang, the sand dunes are the very first thing to explore. Crossing the terrain on foot is possible, but it seems like a mundane and tiring way of moving around. The more prevalent way to travel, unsurprisingly, is quad bike, a vehicle that resembles a motorcycle, but has four wheels. Controlling the four-wheeler might be more challenging than a regular motorbike, but sitting on one is an unforgettable experience for any tourists. A minor anxiety because of the intense engine, a creeping excitement as the vehicle accelerates. It’s hard to find something to compare with such a unique sentiment.

You can easily find places for renting all-terrain vehicles around Bau Trang. They come in various sizes and colours, so it is sure that you will find something that matches your preference. The rental price ranges from 300.000 VND to 400.000 VND for a 20-minute trip, and 800.000 VND to 1.000.000 VND for a 30-minute trip.

2. Rowing on Bau Ba Lake

If you are looking for a more peaceful, relaxing activity in Bau Trang, a boat trip would satisfy your desire. The boat will take you to the middle of the vast lake, where you gain a closer look at the blooming lotuses. Give yourself a moment of utmost tranquility and immerse in the incredible phenomenon of nature. As you take a deep breath of the lotus mellow fragrance, all your worries seem to fade away for a while. This is why lotus is chosen as the national flower as well as a symbol of Buddhism. It is the perfect representation of tenderness and humanity.

III. Best Time to Visit Bau Trang

The best time to visit Bau Trang is during the summer months (particularly July and August), when the flowers blossom and the weather is sunny for most of the time. However, there may be sudden downpour as the rainy season is not over yet. Therefore, watch the weather forecast beforehand to avoid any unwanted disruption.

The ideal travelling time is 5 a.m to 9 a.m and 4 p.m to 6 p.m in the afternoon.

IV. How to Get to Bau Trang?

There are two common routes to get to Bau Trang, the first one starts from Hon Rom and the second one starts from Phan Thiet City.

With the first option, you will drive along an extensive road to Mui Ne and then continue onward the coastal line for about 12 km before reaching Bau Trang.

With the second option, you need to follow the National Freeway 1A and then turn right at Luong Son Town. From there, you will go through a landscape of hills, sand stretches filled with seashells, and coconut forests to reach your destination, Bau Trang. The distance from the highway to Bau Trang is around 18 km.

1. Motorbike 2. Jeep Car

If you are opting for the first option, hiring a Jeep from Hon Rom might be a good idea. It is a great alternative for motorbike because you can witness the panoramic vista without the inconvenience of extreme summer heat and driving on your own. Normally, the expense of hiring a Jeep is 500.000 VND for four people, with extra charge for additional passengers. You may follow the rental agent’s itinerary, which usually lasts for 3 to 4 hours. Otherwise, you can customize your own journey for an equal amount of time.

3. Taxi

If you are staying in Mui Ne- Phan Thiet City, a taxi could be more accessible than rental Jeep car. It’s also a comfortable way to get to Bau Trang in a short time.

V. Tips on Travelling to Bau Trang

Eating: As Bau Trang is quite a remote area, the options of food are very limited. You should bring some light snacks to fuel yourself and enough water to stay hydrated. After exploring Bau Trang, we recommend you return to Hon Rom for appetizing seafood dishes or Phan Thiet for flavorful local delicacies.

Travelling to Bau Trang sand dune definitely demands a considerable amount of time and effort. However, we can ascertain that the experience is absolutely worth it. With this guide, we hope you will have a gratifying time in Bau Trang.

Source: halotravel

Xuan Son National Park is located at the extreme south-eastern extent of the Hoang Lien Mountains, in the watershed of the Red River. Elevations at Xuan Son are lower than elsewhere in the Hoang Lien mountains: the nearest point above 2,000 m is 40 km to the north-west. Limestone karst covers 1,661 ha, equivalent to 30% of the area of the national park. The limestone karst contains a large number of caves, some of which contain river systems.

II. Why is Xuan Son Attractive?

There is no doubt that Xuan Son holds the most captivating scenery in the country.

1. Fauna

Source: dantocmiennui

The natural vegetation types at Xuan Son are lowland and lower montane evergreen forest, as well as lowland and lower montane limestone forest. To date, 314 vascular plant species, 48 mammal species, 121 bird species, 13 reptile species and 14 amphibian species have been recorded at Xuan Son National Park.

The investment plan reported the occurrence of one group of Black-cheeked Crested Gibbon Hylobates concolor with 3 or 4 individuals, and one group of Phayre’s Leaf Monkey Trachypithecus phayrei with 15 to 18 individuals.

However, the current status of these species at the site is not known, and it is possible that both are locally extinct. In addition, the extensive cave systems at Xuan Son are reported to support a high diversity of bat species.

2. Flora

Source: phuotdi

The flora of the Xuan Son National Park is very rich and diverse, including 180 families, 680 genera and 1,217 species of 6 vascular plant phyla. The taxon distributions of these taxa are different.

The Magnoliophyta phylum has 151 families (83.88%), 633 genera (93.08%) and 1,130 species (92.85%); the Polypodiophyta has 22 families (12.22%), 38 genera (5.58%) and 74 species (6.08%); the Pinophyta has 3 families, 4 genera and 5 species; the Lycopodiophyta has 2 families, 3 genera and 6 species; the smallest taxa are Equisetophyta and Psilotophyta with 1 family, 1 genus and 1 species each.

The Euphorbiaceae is the most diverse family (60 species), followed by Rubiaceae (49 species), Fabaceae, Moraceae. There are 26 genera with more than 5 species, made up 4% compared to the total genera of the flora but with 186 species (15.28% of the total species of the flora);

These genera are Ficus (24 species), Ardisia (13 species), Piper and Polygonum, each with 9 species; Diospyros, Elaeocarpus, Hedyotis. Psychotria and Dendrobium, each with 7 species; Begonia, Bauhinia, Desmodium, Maesa, Helicia, Solanum, Callicarpa, Clerodenrun, Carex, Cyperus and Dioscorea, each with 6 species and lastly Tectaria, Pteris, Schefflera, Garcinia, Rhododendron and Syzygium, each with 5 species.

Source: tintuc

There are 40 endangered species (representing 3,4% of the total species of the flora of the Xuanson national park) listed in the Red Data Book of Vietnam (2004), that need to be given priority for conservation and protection.

Useful plant resources comprise medicinal plants (665 species); timber plants (202 species); vegetables and edible fruits (132 species); ornamental plants (90 species); aromatic plants (26 species); bamboo, rattan, fern, jute (9 species); forages (12 species); oleiferous plants (9 species) and poisonous plants (8 species).

3. Climate

Source: youvivu

The climate in Xuan Son is very special. A day experiences 4 distinct seasons. In the morning, the weather is fresh and cool like spring. At mid-day, it is hot like summer. In the afternoon, there is light wind puffing like in autumn. And in the evening, the weather becomes a little bit cold like in winter.

III. Conservation Aspect

Source: zingnews

The main threats to biodiversity are shifting cultivation and forest fire. These would appear to be bigger threats in non-limestone areas, where hillsides are suitable for cultivation. Communities inside the national park, which live in limestone areas, cultivate wet rice on flat valley bottoms.

However, the limestone hillsides close to these communities are still covered with primary forest. One conservation issue at Xuan Son is that the national park is, perhaps, too small to support viable populations of several mammal and bird species in the long-term.

Preventing negative impacts on forests, protecting biodiversity and developing sources of precious genes of rare flora for high economic value. Raising public awareness and improving forest-based incomes for the locals for sustainable forest and environmental protection and management, as well. Those are the two most important tasks in Xuan Son National Park.

IV. What to Do in Xuan Son National Park?

Source: luhanhvietnam

The vast diversity of Xuan Son national park is very suitable for outdoor activities like spelunking, trekking or experiencing homestays with some ethnic minority families. When tourists choose homestay services, they will have a chance to enjoy traditional dishes made from bamboo shoots, spring fish, chicken and glutinous rice as well as join a hand to help local people with their work.

Source: luhanhvietnam

The ideal tour for you is to spend the first day at Du village to contemplate the breathtaking view of tea plantation along your two sides as well as pay a visit to the Dao ethnic people. Next, challenge yourself by trekking Ten Mountain which is the highest peak in Xuan Son. After climbing down from the mountain, you can take a car to go back to your hotel.

With numerous unique features, Xuan Son national park deserves to be one of the most popular destinations for eco-tourism in Vietnam.
